Events / [14 SEP 2019, 23Z - 03Z] Retro NY Fly-in
« on: July 26, 2019, 08:12:16 AM »

Bring your L1011s, Connies, Boeing 747-200s, and the like to Kennedy (JFK) as we retroactively commemorate the opening of the new TWA Hotel!

Route information:
If you will be flying an aircraft into/out of N90 that meets any of the following navigational/equipment criteria, please file “RQST TMU APVL” in the “Remarks” section of your flight plan and expect TMU to process your flight plan before you depart (the alternative being controllers passing along your flight plan while you sit on the ground, waiting for TMU to find it):
  • AIRAC cycle prior to 1701 (January 2017)
  • Non-RNAV capable (any suffix other than /C /G /I /L /S /V /Y /Z)
  • Unable to find ANY of the N90 departure fixes in your FMC/FMS database (N90 Preferred Departure Gate Diagram)
  • Unable to fly ANY preferred or previously filed flight plan (utilizing PRD and FlightAware IFR Route Analyzer)
  • Plan on filing a known historical flight plan route which cannot be found in current flight plan databases.
By filing this note in your remarks, TMU can silently approve flight plan amendment requests and get you off the ground more quickly!

Parking information:
If you know your parking location, please include the following information in your “Remarks” section of your flight plan:
  • Terminal
  • Taxiway entrance to enter the ramp.
If you do not know your parking location, after landing, exit the runway immediately. During busy periods, it is more important to CLEAR THE RUNWAY than it is to receive taxi instructions. For JFK, the rule is as follows: taxi CLOCKWISE on Alpha and COUNTERCLOCKWISE on Bravo.

Events / [30 August 2019, 23Z - 0345Z] N90 Satellites FNO
« on: May 15, 2019, 05:01:06 PM »

Fly into one of the N90 satellite airports: Teterboro (TEB), Farmingdale (FRG), or Westchester (HPN) for a busy Friday Night. The New York Metro satellite airports are small and compact, providing easy access to the city. Because of this, surface congestion will be an issue so fair warning, the more A380s that try and land, the less space EVERYBODY gets (not to mention the wake turbulence separation). Check back frequently for updates!

FRG Charts | TEB Charts | HPN Charts

New York Metro Hotline

Anticipated TMIs: (1) route structure to manage complexity, volume, and balance arrival streams; (2) manage arrival volume to avoid surface congestion; (3) prioritize departures during low arrival volume periods to free up gate/taxi space.

Goals: Manage HPN, TEB, and FRG to keep airborne delays to less than 75 minutes per airport with MIT, metering, and manage inbound departure delays to less than 90 minutes with ground stops of cumulatively less than 180 minutes per airport.

ROUTES Graphical Depiction
Note: route portions between >< are required. If there are multiple route options for your flight, pick any of the valid ones. If your flight has a required portion but does not cover the entire route (from origin to destination), you may file user preferred trajectory (UPT) until the required portion, then via the published route to destination. Users are encouraged to file required routes to manage complexity, volume, and balance arrival streams.

All other routes must file preferred routes at mandatory altitudes.

Events / [1 JUN 2019, 1630Z - 2230Z] ZNY Live Event in Newark, NJ
« on: April 08, 2019, 12:10:42 PM »

For great views of New York City, join us, live and in person, as New York ARTCC convenes in downtown Newark, NJ for our summertime Live Event!

We will be simulating real-ops wherein pilots have the ability to book real-world flights into the New York Metro (EWR, LGA, JFK) and Philadelphia (PHL). To accommodate our schedule, expect slot compression to fit the period during which we'll be controlling (i.e., we'll take the slots across the entire day and compress them into our event time frame, dropping any that exceed our capacity).

Book your flight here!
Note: bookings show departure time in UTC and includes all arrivals and departures into JFK, EWR, LGA, and PHL between 1600Z and 2300Z. The 30-minute padding on each side allows some variability in the flight times due to weather, equipment, etc.

We'll have all major airports staffed, the center, and our TMU PIT (as it's called in New York Center) open.

Any air traffic controllers who wish to attend from outside ZNY are welcome to, just send an email to [email protected].

More information will be available shortly so stay tuned!

Important: event period as noted in the banner is subject to change. This post will be updated if a change occurs.

Events / [16 FEB 2019 16Z - 22Z] Azores/New York Crossfire
« on: December 23, 2018, 11:46:18 AM »

New York ARTCC and Portugal vACC are partnering to present a crossfire featuring two airports from each facility. On the American side, ZNY will host arrivals and departures from John F. Kennedy International (JFK) and Newark Liberty (EWR). On the islands, Portugal will provide services for Ponta Delgada (LPPD) and Lajes (LPLA).

Ponta Delgada is on the coast of the island of São Miguel. To the northwest and the east, mountainous terrain above 2500' buttresses the airport, providing scenic yet challenging approaches to the single 7621' runway.

Lajes Air Base is a multi-use airfield with United States Air Force, Portuguese Air Force, and Azores Air Zone Command operations co-located with passenger operations. The single 10,860' runway lies along a small portion of terrain-free space on the island of Terceira, avoiding the Guilherme Moniz and Santa Barbara Volcanic Complexes to the west.

Newark Liberty and John F. Kennedy both serve the New York Metropolitan area (including New York City) with international traffic. JFK is situated on the Atlantic Coast in the borough of Queens. Newark Liberty lies across the Hudson River on the New Jersey side and provides access to northern New Jersey and other boroughs of New York City.

Charts and briefings will be provided closer to the event so stay tuned for updates!

Events / [26 JAN 2019 19Z - 23Z] ZNY Treasure Hunt
« on: December 23, 2018, 11:38:57 AM »

New York ARTCC will be hosting a treasure hunt featuring three prizes! Study your FAR/AIM as well as the many approaches in the ZNY airspace.

Here are routes to be flown

ZNY loves its Minor airports but it's lost three precious packages! It's your job to find them before anyone else. Finders keepers! Here's the setup: out of the 17 minor airports to choose from, 3 approaches will be selected, each with a prize associated with it. Approaches and prize assignment will be randomly assigned.

Goal:  have pilots fly multiple different instrument approaches (IAPs) in order to find prizes hidden in 3 approaches within the ZNY Minor airports.

Here are the random probabilities of winning individual and combinations of prizes based on wind direction (note: only 1 prize may be won by a single pilot):

A = first prize, B = second prize, C = third prize (in succession) (horizontal axis)
Cumulative Probability (right vertical axis) = probability of finding prize for ALL available approaches (regardless of wind direction)
N/NE/E/etc. (left vertical axis) = probability of finding prize if only using approaches aligned with the given wind direction

Number of approaches based on wind direction

Rules:
  • Pilots must put their simulator in their remarks to be eligible to win prizes:
    • Microsoft Flight Simulator X: MSFSX
    • Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Steam Edition: FSXSE
    • Lockheed Martin Prepar3D v3: P3DV3
    • Lockheed Martin Prepar3D v4: P3DV4
    • Laminar Research X-Plane 10: XPL10
    • Laminar Research X-Plane 11: XPL11
    • Other: OTHER
  • Airports Available & Their Approaches
  • Each prize will be “hidden” in a specific approach at the airports available for the event.
  • Approaches that are eligible will be listed in each airport's ATIS. If an airport does not have an ATIS, you can ask ATC for the open runways at the specific airport. Runway and approach configuration will be based on the wind on the day of the event.
  • The first person to fly a winning approach will be notified and must keep the information confidential until after the event is over.
  • In order to win the prize, the approach must be completed as instructed by ATC, and must be flown to a FULL STOP.
  • Pilots must follow all FARs (including 250 knots below 10,000ft) throughout the event to remain eligible to win.
  • Pilots must follow all VATSIM rules.
  • Any type of aircraft may be used as long as FARs and event rules are followed. Approaches can be done IFR or VFR upon request.
  • Pilots must make clear which approach they would like to fly with the valid approach controller on initial contact.
  • Traffic levels at any airport may vary. ATC is not responsible for any delays due to traffic. Plan accordingly.
  • Pilots may only win 1 prize each.
  • New York ARTCC controllers are ineligible to earn prizes.
  • The winning pilot will receive a private message with the following message:
    Quote
(CONFIDENTIAL) Congratulations, you have found a treasure! Please stay connected on the ground here while we get your information to our Events Coordinator. He will contact you to discuss how you will receive your prize. KEEP THIS CONFIDENTIAL. Thank you for participating.
  • If the weather is below approach minimums, it will not be used.

Here are the three prizes (in no particular order):
  • 1 $50 Amazon gift card ($50)
  • 1 PMDG 737NGX Base Package (P3D: $90; FSX: $70)
  • 1 Carenado product (<$40)

Please submit all questions via this post (on VATUSA) or email the New York ARTCC Events Coordinator at [email protected]!

Events / [16 FEB 2019 16Z - 22Z] Azores/New York Crossfire
« on: December 06, 2018, 07:30:15 AM »
