The Classroom (Controller Tips) / Re: Traffic Management in VATSIM
« on: October 10, 2017, 11:42:25 PM »
VATUSA3, please do point me to any Traffic Management resources you do have, should they exist and I will happily loom over them. However, seeing that this topic is not represented in the VATUSA CBTs, I will attempt to assume that such material doesn’t exist. Further, a few Traffic Management CBTs does not a TMC (Traffic management coordinator) make. That’s why the courses I am developing are separate from those under the current VATUSA structure.

Well as far as I was aware, there was never a specific program for the development of training material pertinent to traffic flow management. Furthermore, there seems to be a continuous debate between "traffic management is not necessary for VATSIM" and "traffic management is necessary for VATSIM" with little to no progress on the matter. So, I looked to develop a set of training materials that addressed this very problem, where my stance is "traffic management = good". Because these materials are very much preliminary, I have not made the outreach to the VATUSA management. I was putting this out for public comment and to gauge interest. Additionally, I do not want to relinquish control of the development or content of the material to VATUSA, so I have held off on requesting official endorsement.

There is a systemic under-understanding (that is, not enough understanding) of traffic management across the network. Thus, during times when VATSIM functions at its most (during events), basic traffic management procedures fail.

Shall we clean up this forum post now that all of these issues are resolved or keep it the way it is?

No, I just had to give it a name for now. Though all the material applies to operations within VATUSA. I will work on the copyright infringement in the future.

Fix it now, please.  I've removed the links and am very displeased at the design giving the appearance that it is affiliated with VATUSA.

Very well. Well there goes an opportunity to present traffic management to the masses...

Nevertheless, the site reflects no affiliation whatsoever to VATSIM or VATUSA. Just that the content in the actual courses is geared towards VATUSA use. Though I guess I could change that to "traffic flow management in online community air traffic organization environments"

Fixed to read "Virtual" instead of "VATUSA"

The Classroom (Controller Tips) / Traffic Management in VATSIM

I am in the process of developing a Google Classroom-based platform for learning traffic management functions in VATSIM. Currently, it consists of one work-in-progress course covering introductory TFM (traffic flow management) topics.

TFM 100 is designed to provide controllers who are relatively familiar with their airspace and who are interested in traffic management a broad insight into the tools and capabilities that work (and don't work) in VATSIM.

If you are interested in participating in the course, visit the Training section. You will need to join the "Students" group in order to receive the access codes to join the courses.

If you are interested in contributing material, logistics, administration--anything with the system, please email me!

I intend on developing these courses frequently so (1) be patient for new material; and, (2) enjoy!

Note: though I am a current member of the NYARTCC, this system, in its current state is not reflective of the ARTCC in any fashion, including representing it, its operations, or its mission. Further, as of yet, the system is disjoint from the VATUSA organization even though material within the course is VATUSA-oriented.

Not really a big deal but LGA and EWR can both use LANNA.J48.FLASK.WINNG1.
ATL - EWR can use PLMMR2.SPA.Q22.BEARI..FAK.PHLBO3.

Ok correct me if I'm wrong but this is how I understand RNAV approaches:

When under ATC, if the intercept angle between the final approach course (depicted on the chart) and the course at which ATC instructs you to intercept is less than or equal to 90 degrees,
Quote
the aircraft must be instructed to conduct a straight-in approach.
(FAAO 7110.65W 4-8-1 Approach Clearance Procedures, Para e)

If you would be intercepting the final approach course at an angle greater than 90 degrees, you (as the pilot) are
Quote
allowed to execute the hold-in-lieu of procedure turn.
(FAAO 7110.65W 4-8-1 Approach Clearance Procedures, Fig 4-8-4 )

As it applies to the RNAV (GPS) 19L at LAS, if you were coming from the south, you could do three things:
  • Fly direct to HAMIG (the IF/IAF)

Because pretty much any course coming from the south is much greater than a 90 degree intercept to the approach segments of this approach, you would be allowed (and most definitely should) perform the hold-in-lieu of procedure turn. Once on the inbound leg, you would fly the rest of the procedure as cleared by ATC.

  • Fly (not direct) to LAPIN, making sure that the angle at which you intercept that segment of the approach (>LAPIN..HAMIG<) is no greater than 90 degrees so that you don't have to perform the procedure turn; the procedure turn is NOT authorized.

  • Fly to SUVIE and do the same as you would LAPIN, making sure that your intercept is no greater than 90 degrees; the procedure turn is NOT authorized here, too.

When the controller gives your approach clearance, s/he is required to specify "straight-in"--that is, with no procedure turn--if s/he requires that. Otherwise, (if your intercept is greater than 90 degrees), you will be allowed to fly the hold-in-lieu of procedure turn.

For traffic volume, ZNY for JFK, other New York area airports, and PHL; ZLA for LAX (and SAN I guess); or ZTL for ATL.
For training and rigor, I would say ZBW, but keep in mind their training is rigorous. Likewise, ZNY is challenging due to the New York metro area airports and thus training is somewhat rigorous.
For number of members, ZNY/ZLA top the charts, though keep in mind that this means there could be times during which you will be waiting longer periods for training (nothing excessive but perhaps longer than some other ARTCCs whose student to staff ratio is much less).
But these are the VATUSA hotspots. There are more than 20 ARTCCs in the US each with its own nuances, challenges, and potential. Every one has at least one major airfield so you will not be going without traffic. Hope this helps.

(Disclaimer: ZNY controller)
