The Control Room Floor / ILS before visual?
« on: December 07, 2010, 06:11:20 AM »
Thank you Daniel. I just don't get the logic of clearing them for the ILS and the visual when they're already on the ILS.

Can you sight in one instance when it can be useful? Thanks again.

The Control Room Floor / ILS before visual?
« on: December 07, 2010, 02:54:43 AM »
I was watching this AA video I found on YouTube - link at the bottom of my post. It's AAL001 from JFK to LAX. One instance during their approach phase I heard SoCal approach gave them clearance for the ILS 24L and then shortly cleared them visual 24L after the traffic pointouts. I've never seen this anywhere in the .65 or I missed something, but can someone clarify if it's possible or "okay" to clear them for the ILS and the visuals later?

thanks!

Link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cijc5AUmwZY

At 06:50 you can hear SoCal app giving them clearance for the ILS24L at this certain fix. Then at 07:24 after the traffic pointout, Socal app then gave them clearance for the visual.

Mike,

I understand where you're coming from. It's very obvious actually from what it seems. However - I don't think VATSIM is a democracy. We don't have any say at all if the Founders wanted to change something in a blink of an eye. We all can side our opinions but there's no guarantee that's it's going to be considered or not. At the end of the day, its still the founders that has the final say. We weren't elected by the people to run our respective facilities, we were appointed by the higher ups.

But hey.... that's just me... that's how I see things around here

All we/I can do is to adopt to those changes...whether we like it or not..

I think the higher ups (founders/BoG) call the shots around here..

When: On December 12, departures will start at 20:00z [10:00 HAST, 12:00 PST, 13:00 MST, 15:00 EST]

It's Christmas time - and AvA is ready! AvA will be flying in to Aspen, Colorado (KASE) from 2 separate departure points. Aspen is a relatively small airfield, you can't land anything BIGGER than a 737 in there, if not hard, impossible - BUT you're more than welcome to try. So this is a perfect time for you to fly your regional jet and or favorite heavy in to an interesting and challenging destination! Do not worry tho, Eagle County (KEGE) will be staffed just IN case you won't make it down to Aspen in your 757, there's definitely no ILS at Aspen, so no chance for you to use any autoland feature here. It's just the VOR/DME to runway 15 approach.

All ORD, JFK, BOS and LAX crew will depart KJFK (JFK-ASE: RBV ETX J60 DBL) - ETE 3hrs 30mins
Note: Please don't forget to plan for extra fuel those who are planning to fly to Aspen, typically, when traffic level rises, you can expect a hold over Red Table (DBL). ATC should be assigning you the SID for JFK.

All DFW, SJU, MIA and TRG crew will depart KMIA. (MIA-ASE: MIA1/WINCO1.WINCO J43 SZW J41 MEM RZC J182 GLD J80 FQF) - ETE 4hrs 30mins
Note: Don't forget to bring more than your 'average' fuel - if you're lucky, you might be put on hold somewhere over ZDV. MIA1 is the preferred departure and WINCO1 for RNAV.

In the spirit of Christmas, everyone are invited to join this fun-filled event. AvA will be departing from JFK and MIA beginning at 20:00z (w/ ATC coverage of course). Whatever your (airplane's) color is, we would love to see you join us and make this event an afternoon worth remembering for everybody.

Best Regards,

Quote from: Andrew Wolcott
I like this idea and have discussed it with many others. Just as we have Ratings and Major Facility certs for controllers, we should have Flight Rules for Pilots. New to the network? Guess what.. you're not allowed to operate at a Class Bravo (Major) Airport until you earn your VFR. Next step is IFR Training. IFR Training teaches you how to fly sids, stars and ILS approaches at a minimum. Now you can fly VFR on the network.

Of course a new pilot client would have to be written that would boot a newbie off the network if they connected at a Major Airport, unless selecting the "Observer" mode, which would disable your Voice OUT comms and Text out on the radio, and somehow through FSUIPC would prevent your aircraft from moving about. But again, the whole connecting with a callsign thing is something I totally disagree with. The architecture of VATSIM needs to be revamped. No more filing flightplans through the pilot client, you must prefile, just as in the real world. Controllers should be able to change an aircrafts callsign just as they are able to do in the real world. Pilots login only selecting their multiplayer aircraft make/model and livery. Flightplans are correlated to squawk codes issued automatically by the system when the flight plan is filed, using a beacon allocation program......

I could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on. I know some of you are drooling......

Andrew

I like your suggestions, Andrew.

But I don't think VATSIM has the current infrastructure to revamp the entire system to match the real world. Have you ever thought it would be really complicated for those who're going to work on it? If you demand a certain realism in this Division, there are others out there who has their own set of procedures in the real world. What you're suggesting is very specific to the United States, what seems realistic for USA may not be the same for Ethiopia. Get my logic?

That's why we can't just do something like what you've suggested. Only way to that is hand over your keys and start your own network that mimics a specific real world system. I wish it was that easy. But no... IMHO what we have currently is tailored to accommodate EVERYONE'S air traffic system. What we can do now at best is to elevate the level of realism in our facilities. By referring to the real world SOPs, using rw video maps, vectoring diagrams and so and so forth. We can never be realistic when it comes to the technological aspect of things.

But if I understand this thread correctly and the thread on the VATSIM forums, they (the founders and the BoG) don't want the kind of realism that exists right now. Hence why they wanted to abolish it or to 'dumb down' the system that exist.

Virtual Airlines / Would you join?

Hello Brendan. Let me share my really short thought about this. There's already a Heli Flying Club on VATSIM, I think that's Metro Helicopters. And there's even Hovercontrol.com which has tons of members and a lot of helis to choose from. Given that you wanted to start a VA like this, which is not 'new' ... have you asked yourself already, "What is so different about my VA? - What is new about this VA, or is it just the callsign?

We've seen a lot of VAs that grew overnight like a mushroom then suddenly disappear a week after because the CEO is no longer interest because nobody would join him. Or the VA is too common for everything. Or he didn't find the staff to work on it.

Please consider this second thought. It takes time working a VA up. Delta VA, AvA, UVA and the like didn't just appeared overnight declaring themselves as a major VA. It took them time to develop, just like how you approach a business development.

Good luck and all the best!

While flying? No.

Observing Yes, you can download the Controller Client from VATSIM.net - VRC is the commonly used client in the United States, you also have to download the ARTCC's sector file from their website in order to observe their sector.

Hope this helps.
