General Discussion / Hurricane Sandy
« on: October 27, 2012, 12:38:59 PM »
Hi all,

As I'm sure many of you are aware, the Northeastern US is expecting a "Frankenstorm" (not my naming) starting sometime Monday and impacting us for most of the week.

First order of business, everyone please be safe and take care of yourselves.

Second, I ask everyone to have patience over the next week regarding exam scheduling, promotions and approvals and event notifications and postings. The weather folks are saying this storm could affect us for up to four days and loss of power and other essential services may be a fact of life for some time.

It's significant that this storm follows the blizzard we experienced last year at this time...just goes to show "You can't fool with Mother Nature!"

So, batten down the hatches, it could be a rough ride...

FAA To Ban Plane Crashes
OCTOBER 30, 2011 | ISSUE 47•43

WASHINGTON—In what officials are calling "a much-needed policy shift," the Federal Aviation Administration announced this weekend that it would ban all plane crashes. "After a careful review of flight data from the past 25 years, we've determined that customers, pilots, and the airlines themselves would benefit significantly from a strictly enforced no-plane-crash policy," said FAA administrator Randy Babbitt, adding that pilots involved in fiery plane wrecks could face a steep fine or even suspension. "The practice of crashing an airliner into an ocean or mountain will no longer be tolerated. American consumers deserve better." According to industry sources, most commercial airlines are planning to fit in as many crashes as possible between now and Jan. 1, when the ban officially goes into effect.

Hi all,

Okay, I had a brain-fart (selective epiphany if-you-will)...keep it clean, keep it chivalrous, but most of all, have fun! Post about anything - scream at the rafters - laugh at ourselves...

Limits - Not-tolerated:
  • politics;
  • personal attacks/grudge-matches;
  • profane/indecent language or porn;

Beyond that, the floor is yours...

Hi all,

Please join me in welcoming the newest member to the VATUSA staff...confirmed as the next Northeast Region Air Traffic Director - VATUSA10 is Mr. Pan Lalas.

Pan brings his extensive real-world experience as an accomplished airline captain and a recent stint as the Training Administrator for the New York ARTCC (vZNY). Pan's talents and passion for the virtual world we inhabit here will, no doubt, serve VATUSA and the Northeast Region well.

Welcome Pan...good to have you aboard!

NOTAMs / VATUSA New Hire!

It is my great pleasure to announce Michael Martin (most recently of Chicago fame) has been selected to fill the position of VATUSA Data Services Administrator - VATUSA6.

Michael brings a remarkable talent and skill-set to the position which will no doubt serve VATUSA and its membership well.

Please remember to shove a tasty kibble treat under his office door along with your problem reports, code enhancement requests, etc...(rumor has it he is partial to Milk Bones). If you do happen to see him wandering the halls in a daze, just say hi and move along...he's probably brain-fried from running too many script traces...

Welcome Michael!!!

General Discussion / VATSIM MITRE/CAASD Member Survey
« on: March 01, 2009, 07:51:13 AM »
Please spread the word about this...post on your own forums...VATSIM is looking for strong response to this.

The MITRE Corporation is evaluating VATSIM as a candidate environment for prototyping and evaluating new aviation concepts, tools and procedures. As a VATSIM user, your VATSIM and real-world aviation experiences are important demographics which we'd like to use to help us interpret results and inform the design of new experiments. The results of such studies may be used in subsequent professional publications and presentations.

This demographics survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete, and should not require soul-searching, introspection, or heady in-depth analyses. For respondents outside the United States, please know that MITRE is very much interested in the wealth of international talent available on VATSIM. While we have not yet engaged that segment of the community, we do recognize its equivalent potential for research purposes and encourage your participation.

This survey will remain active for at least one month, beginning January 16, 2009. You will be required to use your numeric VATSIM ID (and a non-VATSIM password) to begin the survey. Once completed, you may use that identity to update your survey as you feel compelled.

By completing this survey, you are consenting to the use of your data by MITRE for research purposes; if you do not wish to give consent then do not complete this survey. Please know that your candid responses will be held in the strictest confidence and your data will never be used externally except in aggregate, anonymous form and will always be protected by MITRE. If you complete the questionnaire but later decide that you'd prefer not to be included, please contact us and we will drop your data without question.

Please go to http://www.mitrecaasd.org/vatsim/ if you'd like to participate.

Thanks for your continued interest.
