NOTAMs / VATUSA New Hire!
« on: April 21, 2011, 08:42:01 PM »
It is my great pleasure to announce Michael Martin (most recently of Chicago fame) has been selected to fill the position of VATUSA Data Services Administrator - VATUSA6.

Michael brings a remarkable talent and skill-set to the position which will no doubt serve VATUSA and its membership well.

Please remember to shove a tasty kibble treat under his office door along with your problem reports, code enhancement requests, etc...(rumor has it he is partial to Milk Bones). If you do happen to see him wandering the halls in a daze, just say hi and move along...he's probably brain-fried from running too many script traces...

Welcome Michael!!!

I failed the basic test (by one questions I hate that). How long is the wait period before I can retake it?

Thanks in advance.
Jeffrey, The system should automatically re-assign the Basic Examination seven (7) days from today.

If I recall correctly, when I wrote the synced up login functionality, i set it up so you had to first log into the vatusa website, and then once you go the TRC it would auto log you in, once you had a valid session for the main site. If the TRC is broken, that's a problem, and since I was the one who coded the integration peice for it in the first place, i would be very very happy to help fix it. Seems like a lot of work wasted if it's not working properly.
The TRC access has been restored and is functioning properly...it took a while but we got it sorted out.

General Discussion / Unassigned

Vatsim says I'm enrolled in a division & region, so I'm confused about what Unassigned
and Obs mean?
Hi Chris, The OBS is the classification or rating VATSIM assigns for someone who has not gained an ATC rating (S1, S2, S3, C1, etc.).
If your intention is to just be a pilot and fly around the region/division, there is nothing for you to concern yourself with. If you would like to enter training as an Air Traffic Controller then further steps will need to happen.

General Discussion / what I need to next

Hi Brian, It looks like you've already joined the Boston ARTCC (vZBW) on DEC 20, 2010...you should have received a welcome email from the ATM, Don Defosse. If not, I suggest you email him at atm<at>bostonartcc.net.

Welcome to VATUSA and good luck!

General Discussion / Where's Management?

I can put this rather simply. Aside the private agendas and undertones of animosity (from heaven knows what sources), I can assure everyone that VATUSA management is doing their damn job. We may not be doing it the way YOU want or desire it be done but it is being done the way I deem is in the best interest of the Division.

Is it perfect? No.
Will it be perfect? No.
Will it make everyone happy? No.

But then again gentlemen, THIS IS A HOBBY....those of you who feel the need to speak with such indignant voices, try email; forum baiting has never proven an effective m/o.

(BTW, here's a lightning bolt for those who bring up mandatory hours and roster removals, etc...neither I nor the Division set any minimal hourly requirements for anyone. You set those yourselves - suggest you either revise them or get over it.)

On that note, I hope everyone has a great New Year.

General Discussion / Visiting Controller from another Division
« on: December 20, 2010, 07:36:30 PM »
Hi Romano, No, the link is not posted on the website. This is by design so the system isn't filled with non-divisional members who do not make some kind of contact with an ARTCC and request visiting access and approval from that ARTCC.

As you've already discovered, if the visitor was a previous member of the division, they do not need to (and cannot) use that process to gain access to the VATUSA-hosted examinations.

Vishal,

As was replied to you through the VATUSA Help Desk response...you need to establish your Visiting Controller status with a chosen ARTCC...for example Oakland ARTCC (vZOB). If they have examinations in the VATUSA Exam Center, you need to join the Division as a non-member here: www.vatusa.net/visitor.php

NOTE: Not all ARTCCs host their exams on the Division's Exam Center so you may not have to use the link above. Additionally, as part of your assessment for visiting status, your home facility may be contacted for a reference.
Welcome to VATUSA & Good Luck!

General Discussion / Integrity of the Network
« on: November 09, 2010, 08:09:50 PM »
Guys,

Let's take a short break here...the title of this thread is titled "Integrity of the Network"...as if integrity was some abstract ideal. It's not. We are...each and every one of us are the true integrity of the network. This gutter-sniping isn't reflective of the integrity I know every member of VATUSA possesses.

Let me put this in a context that most of you may not have considered.

For all of the perceived value, well thought of improvements, advanced capabilities or heightened realism anyone has ever tried to bring to VATSIM, one basic factor underscores it all. None of it has ever been required, mandated or requested by VATSIM. Each and every software package, SOP, LOA, video map, traffic flow, etc. has been volunteered into the system by someone (singularly or by group) who felt that insertion might in some way "improve" the system. Now before you get all ruffled...there is no doubt a vast majority of participants at all levels agree with what has been accomplished over the years; and those members who have made these contributions should be thanked and shown great appreciation. However, within the context that is VATSIM, there is no requirement that they exist and are, for all intents and purposes, expendable.

As there is no prescribed requirement that certain levels of complexity, reflection of their real-life counterparts or technical capability be established, then judgments of their use or non-use are unwarranted and moot. This is especially true when such judgments are proffered by those whose own operational workspaces are not unduly affected. No one in any ARTCC within this division has the right to dictate to or make unwarranted judgments about the operation of any other ARTCC within this division.

Short trip around the barn gentlemen, this crap-slinging needs to stop. Those of you carrying some self-picked sore you won't allow to heal need to find the betadine and bandaids...let the damn sores heal...the putrifaction is getting unbearable!

General Discussion / VATSIM is only as good as the number of Controllers
« on: November 04, 2010, 07:22:51 PM »
Wait...there's politics on VATSIM? Where?

With all due respect Kyle, it sets a bad precedent to publish "baiting" posts in the forums and I would appreciate your refraining from doing so henceforth in the VATUSA forums. Everyone is well aware of the detrimental perception "politics" has across VATSIM and we do NOT need a BOG member encouraging folks to assume a prejudicial attitude in characterizing their experiences as "politics." It is difficult enough to manage, streamline and enhance the efficacy of the "training pipeline" without the unnecessary stigma of "politics" being iterated.

I urge any member to report to me or any member of VATUSA staff, or appropriate ARTCC staff about any issues they encounter with the units, operations or staff of the VATUSA Division but ask that members refrain from engaging in the kind of forum activity being promoted by Mr. Ramsey's post.

Thank you,

The Classroom (Controller Tips) / ARTCC Selection
« on: October 04, 2010, 05:52:37 AM »
Hi Ed,

Any one of the ARTCCs in the division would be a great location to enjoy the controller-side of our hobby...and remember, it's NOT just about the level of traffic. I recommend you talk to the members of several ARTCCs to get a feel for the "atmosphere" before making a selection.

The Flight Deck / Pilots flying JAX, MLB, DAB and MCO/ORL/SFB

Dave, et. al.,

As of GRPv1 with the implementation of the MAJOR airport facility, it was determined that the issuance of a C1 rating required the endorsement for any MAJOR facility within the ARTCC airspace. This supported the "top-down" service paradigm that has been extant across VATSIM for a very long time. Per GRPv1, visiting/transferring controllers had to satisfy any MAJOR endorsement(s) in order to fulfill the C1 operational requirements. As far as I'm aware, GRPv2 has not removed this requirement though I might have missed something in the interpretation of it all.

Though it may seem onerous at first, a C1 rated controller applying to visit or transfer should have the basic skills down-pat and only need training on the uniquely specific operational requirements of the MAJOR facility(s). Additionally, this is one of the reasons the MAJOR facility lists were reviewed and trimmed on issuance of GRPv2...it insured a limited set of facilities truly reflecting a need to be considered MAJOR is in the system.

Hopes this helps...
