The Classroom (Controller Tips) / Re: vERAM Handoffs
« on: March 14, 2016, 04:13:30 AM »
I haven't had any reports of this from my guys, it could be an issue where the person using vERAM is not accepting it correctly and is cancelling it instead. That would be my guess at least.

The Flight Deck / Re: ILS approaches to non-towered fields?
« on: January 23, 2016, 10:10:34 AM »
Not in your target area...but Alaska has quite a few of these approaches. Here is ILS15 into Cold Bay (PACD) https://skyvector.com/files/tpp/1601/pdf/01241ILD15.PDF. Also the ILSY 11 into Ketchikan (PAKT) https://skyvector.com/files/tpp/1601/pdf/06053ILDY11.PDF Several others throughout the Alaska area, but these are some common ones that AK pilots fly.

The Classroom (Controller Tips) / Re: Exam Retake
« on: January 14, 2016, 05:36:12 PM »
Hey Sol! I just checked and indeed it has been past 7 days. I seem to recall that tests are assigned based on a server script which only runs twice a day...so it may just be that you are between updates. I would give it until tomorrow morning and if it still has not become available for you then send an email to [email protected] so he can see if there is a bug in the server code due to the recent move.

Hope this helps!

Yeah these types of departures abound. I know LAX used to have several with this issue back in the day..but I don't know if they still do.

General Discussion / Re: What ARTCC?
« on: December 16, 2015, 09:52:30 PM »
Wow, an answer to this question without a pimp for the persons ARTCC...I'm impressed. Great Job Chris!

Seriously though, everything Chris said is true. I would suggest exactly the same, most small-medium level ARTCC's should be able to spend a little time with you to get back to speed. Many of the large ARTCC's may not, simply because the influx of new students to those ARTCC's tends to tie up a lot of training availability (not always though). You could also send an email to the training team at whichever ARTCC you feel would be a good fit to see how active/available their particular training department is, which would let you evaluate whether or not you would be able to have that type of "refresher" in a time frame you wanted. You can do this easily now by sending an email to [email protected], simply replace xx with the ARTCC identifier.

General Discussion / Re: Can't Find The ZNY Pilot Forum
« on: December 03, 2015, 07:47:54 PM »
Hi, does anyone know where to find the pilot forum for the ZNY sector? I tried looking on the http://nyartcc.org/ website, but all I could find were forums for controllers only. If you know of any pilot forum for the NY ARTCC, give me the link as I have a question about a re-route I was given a couple of days ago. Thanks!  :)

Marc, they may not have a public pilot forum (not all ARTCC's do), however if you want to get more information or confirm whether a reroute was mandated by some type of policy you can send an email to [email protected] or [email protected] and I'm sure they will get back to you with answers.

Hi Ryan,

It should automatically reassign itself to you after 7 days I believe. If it does not then you are able to go back in and re-take it.

I want to thank everyone that came out for the event today, it was a smashing success from ATC standpoint. I'd also like to have any feedback or comments to speak up...and let us know. You can go to http://vzanartcc.net/tellmeaboutit.php and leave us your concerns or comments (even if you thought we sucked)!

I didn't directly participate but set up at to watch planes come in. I wouldn't say it was a great turn out, but hey it was their first go. Maybe given more time and better weather this can be a nice event. Think next time I will put a Goose out in the water off the end of rwy 25 to do some plane spotting  8)

This was not meant to be a "high-draw" event like most ARTCCs plan. The event's purpose was two-fold.
1) Let all y'all know that Alaska is back and ready to eat some babies!
2) Start getting some scope time to get controllers up to snuff, as well as get people interested in the ARTCC again for when we do have those "big" events.

That being said, I want to thank everyone that came out, and remind everyone that we'll be hosting these "small field" type events every couple weeks for the next couple months...so keep your eyes peeled!

I participated in several legs (FAI-BRW, BRW-FAI, FAI-ADQ).  When I was arriving, ASN was showing OVC006, which was at mins.  So I dropped down to 500 and was able to pick up the shore and approach lights.  Was a fun approach.

Glad to see you Daniel...and sorry again for that mix-up from "the other guy" haha.

Simple Insanity / Re: The funniest things heard while controlling/flying
« on: August 29, 2015, 01:06:43 PM »
The other night, a VIR B744, whose pilot had quite a young voice, was having a *really* hard time taxiing to the departure runway, and said to the controller, "Sorry, sir, I'm a newbie...."

Heard on frequency very shortly thereafter:  "By definition, isn't a Virgin always a newbie?"

What a great way to start my day off...even got an honest to gosh chuckle out of me!

Dang...that should be fun for whatever sap has to try to put those lists together. I see a lot of disgruntled pilots in their future!

Nice one Don. I was tempted to throw my two pence in on the first round but realized it had to be one of your famous pranks and decided to let the bull muck about in the china shop. Rather entertaining I must say!
