Matt,

Didn't even know this was available. Done.

And thanks both of you for the comments.

First of all, I'll state right up front that I'm new at talking to ATC, and like most, have 'jitters' about it. The last time I had contact with ATC while on VATSIM, the controller was rude and obnoxious (in my opinion) and I finished the flight vowing that I would never again go online.

Well, yesterday I double checked that there were no ATC on my route, and then I went online and started to fly. About halfway into my flight, I notice that Oakland Center has connected - right where I'm headed. I'll skip the details, but just say that this was the nicest ATC I've talked to. Helpful, curtious of my mistakes, and friendly. Unfortunately, after landing and taxiing to parking, I disconnected without thanking him.

So - if you read this, I just wanted to say thanks for the contact yesterday. I had a fun flight.

Brian.

Don,

Thanks for the reply, and the encouragement. I'll give what you say a try.

The Flight Deck / Getting frustrated with flying using voice
« on: June 25, 2015, 06:45:20 AM »
I am getting frustrated with my attempts to use voice radio communication during flights. Being new to this, however, I have to wonder if it is just something I need to get used to, or if there is some other problem.

I started again with voice last night. The ATC was very patient and professional, but I finally gave up and had to switch to text only. It seemed as if about 1/3 of everything I was hearing from both ATC and other pilots was mumbled. I had a notepad with me, and I knew what to expect, but some of the details - like squawk code and heading - couldn't be made out.

I have attached to TS3 and chatted with folks, and it is clear as a bell, so I don't think the problem is junk headphones. Maybe it is just really old ears? Anyway, I'm thinking of switching to voice only, but to continue listening and hopefully I'll get used to it. I know this is an extra load for ATC, but it has to be better than hearing 'say again' several times.

What are others experience with this? Does it usually take several flights before you can understand clearly what is being said?

Brian.

I passed my P1 test late Saturday night, and it said I would receive a confirmation email, but I haven't seen anything yet, and my member profile says that I am unrated.

Is there something more I need to do?

Brian.
