General Discussion / Re: VATUSA sponsored event (1 JUL 22)
« on: July 03, 2022, 02:13:01 PM »
You were notified that staffing wouldn't be guaranteed at MIA because the departure airport changed less than 2 weeks from the event date. Yet here you are, complaining about MIA staffing up later, even though they told you it would be unlikely to begin with. Not a good look man...

If you really think ZMA is out to get you, then just go somewhere else! Imagine that you wanted to buy groceries from a food bank, but they were closed that day due to a lack of volunteers. You could either:
A). Go on another day, or
B). Go to a different location that was open

What you shouldn't do is complain in a open forum about volunteers showing up when they told you it was unlikely anyways. This post is just going to deter more facilities from staffing up for your events because they know you will trash them in public.

It is my understanding that a consolidated/large TRACON is characterized by having more than one "Area." In some cases, these "Areas" were previously an independent radar facility that eventually got absorbed/consolidated into the main TRACON. It has nothing to do with what class of airspace lies within the TRACON.

On another note, D10 does more ops (Barely) than C90.

You're gonna try to have all 42 ground positions in ZHU staffed? Sounds like you're gonna need to request the ACE Team. Like, the entire ACE Team...

The Classroom (Controller Tips) / Re: stupid noob questions

Someone might need to back me up on this, but once you've taken and passed the Basic/S1 test in the exam center, you should be prompted to choose a facility/ARTCC. Once you submit a request to join that facility, you should get an email from them with more info regarding training and what to do next.

I hope this info helps and is still accurate. Good Luck!

That link references the 7110.65T from 2010. Luckily enough the information remains basically unchanged:

2−6−3. REPORTING WEATHER CONDITIONS
b. Describe the wind as calm when the wind
velocity is less than three knots.

You answered 3 knots or less.

The Control Room Floor / Re: Squawk Readback Correct
« on: February 13, 2019, 06:54:50 PM »
2−4−3. PILOT ACKNOWLEDGMENT/READ BACK
Ensure pilots acknowledge all Air Traffic Clearances
and ATC Instructions. When a pilot reads back an Air
Traffic Clearance or ATC Instruction:

a. Ensure that items read back are correct.
b. Ensure the read back of hold short instructions,
whether a part of taxi instructions or a LAHSO
clearance.
c. Ensure pilots use call signs and/or registration
numbers in any read back acknowledging an Air
Traffic Clearance or ATC Instruction.

NOTE−
1. ATC Clearance/Instruction Read Back guidance for
pilots in the AIM states:
     a. Although pilots should read back the “numbers,” unless
otherwise required by procedure or controller request,
pilots may acknowledge clearances, control instructions,
or other information by using “Wilco,” “Roger,”
“Affirmative,” or other words or remarks with their
aircraft identification.
     b. Altitudes contained in charted procedures, such as
departure procedures, instrument approaches, etc., need
not be read back unless they are specifically stated by the
controller.
     c. Initial read back of a taxi, departure or landing
clearance should include the runway assignment,
including left, right, center, etc. if applicable.

2. Until a pilot acknowledges a controller’s clearance or
instruction, a controller cannot know if a pilot will comply
with the clearance or remain as previously cleared.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
What I take away from this section of the .65 is that ATC should ensure that "Pilots acknowledge all Air Traffic Clearances and ATC Instructions," and that "Pilots may acknowledge clearances, control instructions,
or other information by using 'Wilco,' 'Roger,' 'Affirmative,' or other words or remarks with their
aircraft identification." Essentially, the pilot doesn't even have to readback the squawk code. Technically he could just say "Roger, N123AB," and that would be perfectly acceptable readback. Since this is (Technically) an acceptable readback, the controller (In my opinion) should just say "Readback correct." Saying "Squawk readback correct," in my opnion is too much extra information. Did the pilot readback or acknowledge the clearance correctly? Then say "Readback correct."

Just my 2 cents.

Simple Insanity / Just another day at ORD

And I thought FNOs were bad...

They were using 28R for all departures and arrivals at one point. 22L had to be plowed for snow.

Just curious, has anyone else seen a line like this before?
