Events / [October 28th 2022 2300Z-0300Z] Evening Under the Arch FNO
« on: September 12, 2022, 10:09:28 PM »

Join ZKC for a night under the Gateway Arch (but please don't fly under!) on the bank of the Mississippi River in beautiful St. Louis. Make sure to cater your favorite meal or stop by Imo's for a slice of pizza. St. Louis Bread Co. is also an option (also known as Panera elsewhere in the country). Top it off with a stop at Ted Drewes for a sweet treat.

We will be staffed from 2300-0300z (6-10PM CDT) for your friendly service. We hope to see you there! Be on the lookout for a pilot brief closer to the event date.

Events / Re: [9/10/2021 2300z - 0300z] The JFK FNO
« on: September 11, 2021, 11:53:49 AM »
Flew into Norfolk last night in the FNO.  Departed DCA in a Bonanza.  Nice GA flight.  VATSIM servers kept tanking....must be those eastern block servers they got when they bought the East German geiger counters, and Gen2 night vision goggles on eBay.  LOL.

The good news is, that even with the childish attempt to overload ZNY with traffic to prove a point(....it was obvious....) ZNY handled it all.  I don't think any other ARTCC can handle a heavily attended FNO like ZNY can.  The other ARTCC's could use this as a gut check moment, and learn a lot from ZNY in my opinion.

Fun time.

Seriously? JFK was over it's capacity before the event started.. The "other artcc's" were the ones who actually had to hold pilots on the ground for hours, and vector planes to meet MIT requirements because JFK can't handle the demand. Glad you enjoyed your VFR flight outside ZNY, but it was far from "handled"..

Events / [September 24th 2021 2300Z-0300Z] FNOklahoma
« on: September 03, 2021, 01:46:18 PM »

Come join ZFW and ZKC for an unique FNO experience. This is the 3rd occurrence of FNOklahoma in VATUSA history.

This FNOklahoma will not be your average FNO. We will try to staff as many towered airports in the state of Oklahoma as we can! We encourage those who want to participate to fly their favorite GA aircraft or business jet. TUL and OKC will also be staffed for your airline flying needs.

Towers will be staffed in accordance with their actual operating hours (please look them up as some will close prior to the event closing time). Flight following will be available depending on controller workload. VFR traffic pattern will likely be unavailable and OKC and TUL due to controller workload. Extensive delays are possible into OKC and TUL due to traffic load and gate constraints.

Expect more information in the coming weeks that will include scenery links and more.

USA Division Updates / Re: 2021 Mid Year Update
« on: July 06, 2021, 10:46:39 AM »

Point 2 is beyond the scope of this Division update.  I don't want to shut down that discussion, I just don't want it to override the purpose of this post.

Regarding the ARTCC ranking:  This information is readily available to anyone that wants it on the various VATSIM statistic sites.  I simply compiled the data by ARTCC.  One of the purposes of VATUSA is to simulate the vNAS --a system that is available 24 hours a day.  Many talk about the want of realism in the forums and Discord on a regular basis.  Sending a pilot to UNICOM because controlled airspace is uncovered technically is not realistic.  I value competent coverage.  Notice I did not put the actual ARTCC uptimes in my post.  For all anyone knows, the range between 1 - 21 could be a matter of minutes or it could be a very wide range.

Yes, this is a volunteer hobby.  If you have a staff position; however, you volunteered for a non paid job.  Just because you are not getting paid doesn't mean you don't have standards and expectations.

Mani, why include them then? It really seems to have done more harm then good. I fail to see how realism and competency come into play. Unlike the real world, VATUSA doesn't force new people to go staff facilities with low amounts of controllers. We cannot have VATUSA listing the ARTCC's from first to last by number of hours controlled. As Dylan already said, it does not tell the full story. When one facility has more OBS's on their roster than another has total controllers, it's clear who will have more time on the network. My question to you is. Why are facilities towards the bottom of the list getting emails being told to "be better". Small facilities will never be able to put up the number of hours as the big ones, 30 people can't keep pace with 100+.

Missing FNO? Join ZKC as we present a new type of throwback event, Saturday Night Operations! Come see how many aircraft ZKC controllers can fit into St. Louis International (KSTL) on April 3rd, 2021 from 2300Z to 0300Z.

Here are a few reminders to consider prior to flying this event:

*Please look over the pilot briefing provided once it is available.
*Have updated scenery. This can just be an AFCAD.
*PDC's will be issued to all PDC capable aircraft. If you do not receive a PDC, or are not CPDLC capable, please call delivery for your voice clearance. You will most likely need an amended route if you're PDC capable and you didn't get a PDC.
*It is important that on initial contact with the first approach controller and ground controller that you have the current ATIS info.

*In the interest of avoiding lengthy ground delays, ZKC asks that participants limit flights between STL and MCI airports. The purpose of this event is for the airport pair to compete against one another for traffic volume.
