General Discussion / Re: Microphone volumes
« on: January 05, 2022, 12:22:44 PM »
Are we talking about the bug with AFV or actual volume levels?

There is an AFV bug where the volume will unexpectedly go to astronomical levels and blow your ears out, and the next transmission by the same person will be normal. There was an entire channel dedicated to troubleshooting it in the AFV discord, not sure if it is still there or if that discord is active. It still happens all the time so I guess they never did figure it out.

As far as general volume levels I rarely have any issues. 1 in 10 pilots will say my mic is low, but I've done everything possible to mitigate that and its few and far between so I think pilots need to understand they can and should adjust aircraft volume in their settings/ plane settings and adjust the AFV volume in their pilot client.

NOTAMs / Re: Oakland Oceanic is moving!
« on: September 22, 2021, 09:50:32 PM »
Update: ZOA is officially in control of ZAK and a new Pacific Ocean LOA has been formed and finalized between VATUSA/ZOA, VATPAC, and VATNZ. The Pacific Oceanic Partnership is now dissolved. The new LOA can be found on the Oakland ARTCC website at the bottom of this page: https://oakartcc.org/controllers/procedures

VATUSA Controllers that had their Pacific Oceanic endorsement under the old partnership and wish to maintain it will have until December 1, 2021 to apply as a ZAK visitor on the Oakland ARTCC. Due to temporary technical limitations, after applying to be a visitor at Oakland ARTCC please email management[at]oakartcc.org or DM the ATM/DATM on Discord informing them you are visiting for the purposes of controlling ZAK. All ZAK controllers are subject to the activity requirements in the LOA to maintain their Pacific Oceanic endorsement.

The Flight Deck / Re: Computer upgrade
« on: September 19, 2021, 11:17:40 AM »
P3D is still dependent on the CPU, but v4 and v5 lean on the GPU a lot more than it did in the previous versions (that's not saying much). I have a 9900KF overclocked at 4.9Ghz all core and recently upgraded from a RTX 2070 Super to an RTX 3070Ti and it didn't really help my FPS at all in P3D although it did clean up some specific situations that would be hard on the 2070S. MSFS on the other hand it helped a lot, it got me from the low 50fps range to 80 FPS at 1440p in MSFS.

The GPU market is in shambles right now so getting one is going to be hard. I had to work a deal with a co-worker to get my 3070Ti and I still paid $100 over MSRP for his trouble, but I'd rather pay $100 over and not $300-400+ over MSRP. Upgrading to a 9900K will run P3D or XP11 well, and a 1060 will be "fine" if you temper expectations and set your settings appropriately.

Most of the developers for P3D seem to be headed in the direction of MSFS exclusivity, so that is something to consider if you want to sim long term. You could always upgrade the CPU and run lower settings in MSFS until you are able to snag a GPU.

You could always consider a pre-built if you really want the CPU/GPU combo. Something like NZXT BLD will get you a modern CPU, 30 series GPU, DDR4 etc for a reasonable price.

Good luck!

As a result of a break down in communication with other affected Divisions, we are suspending the September 1 transition date while we work through other details with VATPAC and VATNZ. We will post more information when it is available.

NOTAMs / Oakland Oceanic is moving!
« on: August 28, 2021, 03:19:20 PM »
Effective September 1, 2021, Oakland Oceanic will be leaving the current Pacific Oceanic Partnership and will be under the sole control of the Oakland ARTCC. This puts ZAK inline with how other oceanic airspaces within VATUSA are handled.

What does this mean if you're Pacific Oceanic certified and wish to continue controlling ZAK? There will be a two month grace period in which Pacific Oceanic certified controllers may elect to join Oakland ARTCC as Oceanic Visitors. These Oceanic Visitors will maintain their ZAK certification and will not need to undergo any additional training, but will be subject to Oakland ARTCC policy. After the two month grace period ends (November 1, 2021) anybody wishing to control ZAK airspace will have to join the Oakland ARTCC as either a regular visitor and progress through domestic training and certification prior to ZAK, or join as an Oceanic Visitor and will receive training and certification for ZAK.

There are discussions about a new Pacific Partnership LOA similar to a mutual visiting controller agreement, but the plans are tentative. With GCAP pending changes to Oceanic are likely. Should some form of new agreement be established an announcement will be made, until such time all ZAK controllers will need to be on the Oakland ARTCC roster after September 1, 2021.

Applications for ZAK Oceanic Visitors will open September 1, 2021 on the Oakland ARTCC website www.oakartcc.org

Questions can be directed to Ryan Parry, VATUSA Western Region Manager (vatusa4[at]vatusa.net) and Daniel Everman, Oakland ARTCC Air Traffic Manager (atm[at]oakartcc.org).
