General Discussion / Re: A Controllers Reminder and Request
« on: November 07, 2020, 09:05:08 AM »
Great post, Mike.

I would like to add for any pilots around, radio checks are unnecessary unless you suspect an actual problem. Maybe it's AFV, maybe it's something else, but the last center session I did nearly every pilot called for a radio check before their actual request.

Just make the request!

AMEN!

And if you're going to call for a radio check, have a little class.  Say your callsign first.  Don't just scream "Radio check" into the mic.

Mark, best of luck in your endeavors!

You took over at a tough time and had many hurdles to overcome.  I think you did an admirable job.
Thank you for your service!

I personally believe (not speaking as ATD) that all minor fields should be open per a Controller's GRP rating.  Training Departments should be teaching transferable skills when conducting ratings training.  A controller should be able to read a chart and a SOP for any Non-Designated airspace field across the Division (perhaps with a few exceptions).  Training bandwidth across the Division is very tight.  Training Departments should be focusing primarily on Designated Airspace training.  The whole purpose of Designated Airspace training is to teach material that is in addition to GRP Competencies.

VATSIM is a social activity.  The Mutual Visiting Agreements give controllers an opportunity to interact with other members without having to go through the red tape of a Visiting Agreement to control sporadically at a field in Non-Designated airspace.  Controllers considering transferring to a facility could take advantage of the Mutual Visiting Agreement to try out the ARTCC.

Controlling in Designated Airspace should not be part of these agreements.  Controllers wishing to control Designated Airspace outside their home facility should have to comply with the formal Visiting Controller Policy

I'm with Manny on this one.
Especially for smaller ARTCC's, it can also be a nice tool to staff up events.

« on: September 30, 2017, 09:07:18 AM »
ZOB's FNO last night was a TREMENDOUSLY fun time!  We were nearly overwhelmed with the volume of traffic.

Thanks to everyone who flew with us and thanks to all our controllers who went the extra mile when their brains started bleeding toward the end!

I want to note that this was Cleveland's first event in at least a year where ACE Team assistance was not required.  That's a HUGE step for our little ARTCC!

We hope you'll choose to fly ZOB again in the near future and we are always happy to welcome new visiting controllers!
