Due to the 4th of July holiday falling on this Friday. VATUSA will not be hosting the weekly Friday Night Ops as many controllers and pilots will be celebrating with their families.

We look forward to seeing you again at KSAT on July 11.

Thanks!

General Discussion / Our Teamspeak Environments are in Shambles
« on: June 13, 2014, 01:23:20 AM »
Quote from: Zachary Beard
You might be right logistically speaking. However, I think the discussion has been fruitful thus far, and could continue to be so provided that people give their ideas about palpable issues related to these behaviors. What's a conversation but a discussion that starts in one direction but ends up going in a direction that focuses on what's (potentially) been on the minds of the majority anyways?

Looking for open minded thought on VATSIM members' priorities on the network, not a quick and dirty solution to 1 or 2 ARTCCs' behaviors, at this point. Maybe discussion about generally caustic/elitist attitude problems existent on the network as of late is in order. That's at least one of the causal background issues that made me want to write this post.

"Measurable effectiveness" of a post, or however someone would like to word it, is not something I wish to discuss here personally. Broad discussion is something these forums are good for in my opinion.

Cheers
ZY

Call me the minority here but why not let sleeping dogs lie. I've been in a quite a few teamspeaks myself and it seems that this type of behavior is very, very rare. Is it appropriate for an ARTCC's management to openly encourage flat out bashing another facility? No.

However, everyone has been guilty of talking bad of another facility or controller and if you want to play the higher than thou card, look me dead in the face and tell me you have not said  a single unkind word about a bad pilot. It is human nature to express our opinions and frustrations. It is unhealthy not to do so.

A facilities teamspeak is their home and they should have the right to do what they please there. If you don't like what you are hearing, then either don't listen or leave the teamspeak channel. It's not up to a teamspeak visitor to come in and demand that things be changed or tattle on them for what they're doing in their own space. It's akin to going into a chain smokers house and telling them not to smoke in their own house because you chose to come and visit., then running to their employer to tell them that they smoke.  It doesn't need to be regulated, or taken away from the facility. Our teamspeak is where we as a huge group of friends hang out even if we're not using the network.  It is a core tool that has helped foster the relationships I've made on the network first, and a coordination tool second.

I think he was referring to the fact that within those ARTCCs, their "high score" airport has a lower score than their "low score" airport.

Just seems odd... and potentially embarrassing as if someone forgot how the number line works.

Ah. I can go fix that. The airports were submitted by the ARTCCs themselves in such a format and points were assigned based on that form. So if they put the higher trafficked airport as the high score it was instead at assigned the lower point value due to traffic. The higher traffic volume airports don't need as much incentive to visit.

Any landing within the event window will qualify for points.
Legs do not have to be connected
Point values are assigned based on traffic values. So ZJX should have more points than ZLA because their featured airports see less traffic.
Any Flight which is time accelerated is ineligible for points on that leg.
Crash recovery will be allowed within reason provided the pilot respawns near where he disconnected.

Question on the rules of the contest so I'm clear and there's a level playing field for all pilots:

Can a pilot complete a leg within the first few minutes of ATC being available on the east coast giving them a clear advantage?

Example: If one could time the first flight such that takeoff from a given airport starts before the event and landing occurs let's say 5 minutes after the event starts. The event documentation talks about flying from one ARTCC to another and landing within the parameters of the event time but it doesn't mention valid takeoff times.

Question 2: Do contest legs need to be "connected"?  The contest documentation shows each leg being connected.

Question 3: Some ARTCCs appear to have a higher point value in the lower score column, for instance ZLA and ZJX. Is this correct?

I'll also make the assumption that time compression in the simulator will not be allowed for any pilot and simulator crash recovery will be allowed for FSX users.

Thank you,
Jas

VATUSA is excited to announce the return of Light Up America on Saturday May 17, 2014. This event will feature all 22 ARTCCs within VATUSA for 10 hours. 4 hours of which the entire continental USA will be lit up with Air Traffic Control at the Centers as well as Major Approach and Tower facilities. Enjoy uninterrupted ATC during the event. Simply fly between any airports as much you would like and enjoy the quality ATC Services that VATUSA facilities pride themselves on.

Every facility will be on for at least a 6 hour time frame with the East Coast facilities starting up at 12:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time. As the event progresses, the additional centers will log on at noon in their local time zone. By 3:00 PM all the centers will be online for you. As the event winds down, facilities will be encouraged to remain online, but must remain online until at least 6:00 PM local time. As they begin to close down, we will extend the event even further west with the Anchorage, Honolulu, and Oakland Oceanic control facilities coming online to work your Hawaii and Alaska flights! It will be a great day of flying for you.

General Discussion / Lost Comms 7600

I don't remember it ever stating 7600 is not allowed, 7500 is a different matter, if you use 7600, I'd make sure that the controller is okay with you simulating that before you do it

Cheers!
