The Control Room Floor / ATC Use of Guard (121.500) frequency
« on: May 12, 2018, 03:02:52 pm »
Recently the questions has come up as to whether it's appropriate for an ATC to attempt to reach a NORDO aircraft on GUARD frequency. In the past I seem to recall a Division policy prohibiting this, but cannot locate it now. VATSIM CoC only states
Quote
Controllers should not carry on private conversations between themselves, pilots or other individuals on the active communication frequency, the ATC channel or on the "guard" frequency (121.50). This interferes with providing ATC services to other pilots. The guard frequency should only be utilized in cases of emergency and under no other circumstances. Controllers are encouraged to use private chat boxes for carrying on private conversations.
Ref: CoC C9.

The question is, is attempting to reach a NORDO pilot acceptable under this "emergency" clause, or should we stick to using the .contactme PM and UNICOM to attempt to reach an otherwise unresponsive a/c?

Anchorage (vZAN) / Controller Practical Exam
« on: March 14, 2011, 03:26:33 pm »
Join us this evening (03/14/2011) from 2000EDT/2400z as we test a new Anchorage Tower controller. Make Corey Lemoine earn his rating by working IFR and VFR traffic from PANC, PALH, and Z41! Charts can be found at any U.S. source, such as http://skyvector.com. We look forward to seeing you this evening, and anticipate a roughly 2-3 hour minimum staffing available, but we're known for those extra long shifts in the Final Frontier.

For more information on the Anchorage ARTCC, please see our website at http://vzanartcc.net. Feedback from any pilots that come out to help us is greatly appreciated, and can be sent either via the feedback link on our main website, or via email to ATM@vzanartcc.net for this event!

Come one and all to join us on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 from 00:00z-03:00z for an enroute controller exam in Anchorage ARTCC. We need IFR, VFR, and uncontrollable (kidding) pilots to give Mr. Lara the workout of his life on Anchorage Center! Fly out of PANC, PAFA, PAJN, or any of hundreds of smaller (un-towered) airports as we put him through his paces. For charts and information visit our forums, which can be found by clicking here. Let's make this a night to remember (or a night he'll have to drink to forget!)
