VFR OPS: Kodiak
« on: August 17, 2015, 02:49:31 PM »

Come join the Anchorage ARTCC for VFR OPS, Kodiak. We will provide full tower and enroute services on Wednesday, September 9th 2015 from 2330 until 0230 Zulu (1530-1830 Alaska, 1930-2230 Eastern). All aircraft are welcome from Super Cubs to 767’s and everything in between. Of course, VFR operators are the name of the game but IFR aircraft are welcome to join in the fun.

Our recurring events feature tower controlled airports, located in rural areas of Alaska. Whether it’s passenger, mail, cargo or emergency medical transportation, residents in bush communities require necessary services. Our featured airports serve as hubs that provide the essential link between small villages and the rest of the world.

May I suggest everyone take a look at the ILS approach runway 25 before flying in tonight!

Did everyone make it down in 1 piece, or several?

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to be there.  But (VATSIM only, not thinking RW), I once was asked this question about an event, and got to answer, "Several got down in one piece, and one got down in several...."  :)

I didn't directly participate but set up at to watch planes come in. I wouldn't say it was a great turn out, but hey it was their first go. Maybe given more time and better weather this can be a nice event. Think next time I will put a Goose out in the water off the end of rwy 25 to do some plane spotting  8)

I participated in several legs (FAI-BRW, BRW-FAI, FAI-ADQ).  When I was arriving, ASN was showing OVC006, which was at mins.  So I dropped down to 500 and was able to pick up the shore and approach lights.  Was a fun approach.

This was not meant to be a "high-draw" event like most ARTCCs plan. The event's purpose was two-fold.
1) Let all y'all know that Alaska is back and ready to eat some babies!
2) Start getting some scope time to get controllers up to snuff, as well as get people interested in the ARTCC again for when we do have those "big" events.

That being said, I want to thank everyone that came out, and remind everyone that we'll be hosting these "small field" type events every couple weeks for the next couple months...so keep your eyes peeled!

Glad to see you Daniel...and sorry again for that mix-up from "the other guy" haha.

Ken hit the nail on the head Chris. With VFR OPS events we anticipate the draw will be substantially lower then Friday Night Ops but out goal isn't a plethora of traffic. We just want an event that will be unique and fun. Other then the weather being low and blowing, we accomplished our goal. Next time, take that Goose and do some pattern work:)

@Ken and Alex, I didn't figure you would have HIGH turn out as most like those darn flying cigars which aren't really know to fly VFR  ;D
