About John Foster DullesJohn Dulles was born February 25 1888 in Washington DC. In his early life Dulles studied law and was appointed as a Major in the War Industries Board during World War I. At the conclusion of the war Dulles went on to participate in the US delegation to the Versailles Peace Conference following the Armistice of WW1. After returning to law practice in the 20s and 30s World War II recalled him to further government service where he participated in the San Fransisco Conference which authored the preamble to the United Nations; an organization to which he was appointed delegate in 1946, 1947, and 1950. In 1949 Dulles served for four months as an interim senator for New York. When Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected as the 34th president of the United States in 1953 Dulles was appointed the 52nd Secretary of State where he was instrumental in building up NATO and was the architect of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization. For this, Dulles was named man of the year by Life Magazine in 1954. In 1959, at the age of 71, Dulles died after a three year battle with colon cancer and was interned at Arlington National Cemetery with posthumous awards of the Medal of Freedom and the Sylvanus Thayer Award with Eisenhower dedicating Dulles' namesake to the newly commissioned Washington metropolitan airport that would become KIAD.
