Is there a way to play the ATIS if available without having the sims default ATIS playing in the background?

Hmm.. which sim is this? FS9, FSX, or P3D?

I ask because last I remembered in both FS9 and FSX, the sim's default ATIS gets disabled the moment you connect to the network..

I'm not sitting at my computer at the moment, but I'm pretty sure if you go under Settings and then Sound, you can turn the slider all the way down for Voices and that should take care of the problem.  It will not affect the volume of voices coming through your pilot client as that is completely separate.

Absolutely right!  The Voices part of the sounds controls this.  Bringing it down to 0 will have the desired effect.

However...  You will still be shown whatever ATIS is up in your text bar.

I'm curious to see the end result of this dilemma.  It's bugged me for a while!

These work for me.

To turn off the FSX voice ATIS:
Options->Settings->Sound->Volume levels
Uncheck "Voice"

To turn off the FSX text ATIS:
Options->Settings->General->Air Traffic Control
Uncheck "Show message log in ATC menu"
