Events / Re: Assume there is an Open Mic Night tonight?
« on: May 01, 2021, 05:22:25 AM »
Not from my perspective.  An empty slot on the calendar means no event.  I just guess I couldn't get my old-school brain wrapped around no event on a Friday night :)  Now I'm recalibrated :)   Don't mind me, I'll just shuffle back to my dusty old rocking chair in the corner.  Where's my afghan?  :) :)

Quick question -- there's nothing on the calendar for FNO tonight -- so I assume it's an Open Mic Night, but you know what assume means... :)  Is that correct?  Would there normally be something on the calendar to specify Open Mic Nights, or are we no longer doing that?  Thanks!

General Discussion / RIP Richard Green 810012
« on: February 14, 2021, 09:09:15 PM »
Sadly, Richard Green (810012), one of VATSIM's first members, has lost his battle with cancer and passed away.  Richard had served as a VATUSA staff member from VATSIM's inception through 2006, as a VATSIM Supervisor, as a founding member of the team that organized the weekly VATUSA Friday Night Ops (FNO event), and VATSIM's Cross the Pond events.

Richard's love for VATSIM helped ignite his passion to fly in the real world, becoming an airline pilot in 2007.

Richard will be missed.

Congratulations on your appointments.  You have all been entrusted with a great responsibility -- to grow this hobby by making it better and more enjoyable for all of our members, ATC, Pilots and Both.  I wish you all the best of luck and success in making this vision a reality.  It is so great to see VATUSA getting better, day by day!

The Flight Deck / Re: Back into VATSIM After a Long Break ... A Few Q's
« on: November 07, 2020, 11:41:26 PM »
A couple of additional notes/clarifications to the above

1.  Per AIM 4-1-20(a)3:  Transponder and ADS-B operations on the ground. Civil and military aircraft should operate with the transponder in the altitude reporting mode (consult the aircraft's flight manual to determine the specific transponder position to enable altitude reporting) and ADS-B Out transmissions enabled at all airports, any time the aircraft is positioned on any portion of the airport movement area. This includes all defined taxiways and runways.

3. I like to look up the citypair using Flightaware (https://flightaware.com/live/findflight/kxxx/kyyy (where kxxx is your departure airport ID and kyyy is your arrival airport ID)), select an appropriate flight for airline/equipment, and then look at the gate information.

Just a thought...  with the Asobo simconnect bug rendering any simconnect apps (including the connection to vPilot) essentially inoperable, you might expect a million questions from pilots that end up with crappy framerates not knowing that MSFS has an unresolved bug....  May want to have an alias ready....

Hoping the bug gets resolved before the event.  But if not.... "Brace for impact!"  :)

So, um, this is awkward, but, um... should we staff for this?

I'm laughing my butt off.  Perfect, perfect post.  Respect!

General Discussion / Re: How active is VATSIM?
« on: June 22, 2020, 12:23:37 AM »
Hmmm...   Content of OP post doesn't seem to match subject line of OP post....  Josh's answer is spot on with respect to what I believe OP's question was really getting to....

But, I'm a stats guy.... :)  To answer OP's actual stated in the subject question:  How active is VATSIM?

Since VATSIM started, we've had nearly 690,000 members join
Nearly 83,000 are considered active members
We have over 200 new members join every day
On average, nearly 5,000 members log on every day

So, yeah, VATSIM is pretty active :)
