The Control Room Floor / Re: v7340.2 ISR
« on: February 12, 2020, 11:17:13 AM »
1) A virtual airline that uses a real world Telephony but not the real world 3LD. Example: One of the major Delta Virtual Airlines goes by “Delta” Telephony but uses DVA as their 3LD instead of the real world DAL.
This is incorrect. DVA pilots using DVA are doing so contrary to the airline’s policies. The DVA#### is a strictly internal identification at DVA and they should be using DAL or the appropriate Connection carrier callsign on the network.

Ah, I didn’t know this. I did assume that it was their policy to fly under that 3LD due to the amount of pilots doing so. However, with the massive amount of pilots that do so, do you think it would be a good idea to put it into this ISR?

UPDATE 08MAR2020:
Here is the File. I won't have it here forever.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Hello All,

I am in need of the collective knowledge here.

At ZLC, we have a command that opens your browser to a webpage that tells you the aircrafts telephony. It is not the most efficient method for finding this information so we wish to upgrade it to what we coined as an "In-Scope Reference (ISR)" message.

This ISR would return both the 3 Letter Identifier (3LD) and Telephony of an air-carrier within the scopes frequency text box so that nobody other than the user can see this information. (for those that are familiar, it is simply an override message to yourself)

The command will be just .id. Then without a space, the user would type out either the 3LD of the carrier in question or the name they heard the pilot refer to themselves as.

Example:

.idBAW (enter)

or

.idSPEEDBIRD (enter)

would return in the scope:

“3LD: BAW ____ Telephony: SPEEDBIRD”

The data will be based off of the FAA JO Order 7340.2 but I wish to include common fake airlines and various uses of these 3LDs.

Please use this form to submit any of the following. The more the better.
https://forms.gle/t1MA1VX5MBBn2juh9

1) A virtual airline that uses a real world Telephony but not the real world 3LD. Example: One of the major Delta Virtual Airlines goes by “Delta” Telephony but uses DVA as their 3LD instead of the real world DAL.

2) A virtual airline that uses a real world 3LD but uses a different Telephony on VATSIM. Example: Canadian Express Virtual Airlines uses the 3LD of CXA which is “XIAMEN AIR” in real world.

3)  A virtual airline that uses a fictitious 3LD and airline name. Example: 3LD: VVX, Telephony: Example Air

When I am done with the alias file, I will share it here as an edit to this OP and as a reply to this thread.
Example of the ISR attached

Tried posting in the support forums on VATSIM.NET but it won't let me make a new topic.

The client crashes when I deselect my RX button and then select it again sometime after.

General Discussion / Re: trying to find a new ARTCC
« on: January 13, 2020, 12:45:01 PM »
Every ARTCC also seems to have a different atmosphere to them. Their social culture and how seriously they take this hobby. It helps to list out what it is that you are looking for in an ARTCC and then maybe people can help guide you from there.

ZLC for example:

We try to get our procedures and training as close to real world as possible without you having to study for 40hrs a week.

Our social atmosphere is hit or miss... we sometimes have 6+ people in our discord talking about the newest video game, aircraft, CPU and sometimes we sit there and debate the finer points of point-out procedures.

Then other times, you can be the lone wolf controlling.

We go for quality rather than quantity.

There are many ARTCCs that share this same outlook and then there are others that hold the complete opposite atmosphere. Good luck on your find!

Some sites will have info like this. But the problem is that it would be extremely rare when the amount of controllers would be online to actually cover all of these positions.

News / ZLC Welcomes New EC
« on: May 18, 2019, 04:19:25 PM »
ZLC is very happy to welcome Zack Ellett to our staff as our Events Coordinator.

Zack has been a member of VATSIM since April of 2018 and started controlling in May of 2018. In a short amount of time, he has attained a C1 controller rating, over 600 hours controlling, and 700 hours flying. We have been impressed with his initiative and ability to quickly grasp and follow specific procedures laid out within ZLC.

Zack possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as many different types of graphic design skills (banners, posters, etc). He has managed many different projects from concept to completion including designing, marketing, and executing events.

Zack brings a wealth of professionalism and skills with him. We are truly grateful to have him with us.

General Discussion / Re: We don't talk enough...
« on: December 08, 2018, 12:04:17 PM »

You can be fun without sacrificing a standard and a desire for improvement. Why is there a perception that it has to be one or the other? I can sit here and turn the argument around just the same and say that most of the people that complain that "ZMP is too difficult" have never spent time on my TeamSpeak, either.

Ask guys like Nolan or Jackson who have posted in this thread. They've both signed up as Visiting Controllers at my facility. Neither has had any roadblocks placed in front of them as far as checking out, but that doesn't mean that they didn't have things left to learn. We can all learn new things and get better every time we plug in. That was one of Derek's key messages in this thread.

^This wasn’t said loud enough.

General Discussion / Re: Need some help
« on: May 24, 2018, 06:52:30 AM »
I would suggest starting by telling us what exactly do you want?

Large/small airspace

Many Bravo class airspace’s?

Mainly IFR traffic or VFR?

What type of training do you want? Some ARTCCs like to keep it very simple and others like to get as close to real world perfection as possible.

Etc...

“Practice makes perfect” no... it doesn’t.
Practice makes habit.

If you practice with bad technique, you are going to use muscle memory to resort back to those bad techniques when you are in the dumps with traffic.

Utilize the slow times to take a few extra seconds to think about each transmission prior to keying up that mic so you say it correctly with the fewest amount of words.

Then, come event time, you are set up with GOOD habits.

The Control Room Floor / Re: There are two types of controllers...
« on: May 19, 2018, 11:25:52 AM »
Most controllers can think of situations where a pilot on the network simply didn't understand a piece of phraseology. In these situations nonstandard phraseology is needed. In addition to this the .65 is not an end all be all. There are times where no standard phraseology exists for what needs to be said.

Same as real world

News / Welcome New ZLC Webmaster!
« on: May 09, 2018, 04:50:21 PM »
ZLC would like to welcome our newest Webmaster, Wes Loeffler to the team!

Since the age of 7 years old, he has been utilizing flight simulation as a means to expand his knowledge and entertainment outlets. He joined VATSIM in 2014 as a pilot and took an interest in becoming a Salt Lake City ARTCC controller just over a year ago. He is now proud to call ZLC his home.

Wes began his road to coding around the same time with HTML/CSS. Shortly after, he extended his reach to PHP. Wes has gained a great deal of experience as both a controller and coder ever since and we are exited to see what he can do with ZLC.

how else are you supposed to recruit?

;-)  ;-)  ;-)

I understand the work that goes into it, but I respectfully disagree with ATC PMs being the answer to recruiting outlets. There are plenty of social media and forums to do that in. Redit, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, ......... MySpace (haha).... VATSIM, VATUSA, X-Plane.org.... the list goes on. Don’t bother ATC doing a job.... even if it sounds dead on frequency, unless they ask.
