It's January and winter is in full swing, bringing cold temperatures across the country. Luckily for you, however, ZLA has just the solution: 4 hours of full ATC coverage at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas! Come escape the freezing cold at KLAS from 2359z-0400z on Saturday, January 19th. We hear there's no shortage of things to do in Vegas, either.

Also, pilots, please listen to the ATIS on 132.4. A good time to do this is during your initial descent before contacting Las Vegas Approach. You can usually get the ATIS about 40 miles out from the airport.

When you contact Las Vegas Approach, let them know four things:

• Your callsign
• Your present altitude (NOT the altitude you are assigned or leaving)
• Whether you're climbing or a descending and what your assigned altitude restriction is (if any)
• The current ATIS code

When you do this, Approach will assign you a runway and an approach and send you on your way!

Example:
Pilot (on the TYSSN5 arrival): "Las Vegas Approach, Delta 983, flight level 190 descending 12,000 with information Charlie."
Controller: "Delta 983, descend via the TYSSN FIVE arrival. At PRINO, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach."

Easy peasy!

What not to do:

• Ask Center what runways are in use
• Request an approach from Center
• Not listen to the ATIS
• Make up an ATIS code that's not current

While your instructions are clear you also contradicted yourself.

You say to report your present altitude not the altitude you are assigned or leaving but then in the example the pilot is saying, "FL190 descending 12,000...".

I would also argue that one's present altitude is also the altitude leaving but that may be a philosophical discussion better suited for another time.

Roger, it means that saying: “Las Vegas Approach, DAL123, descending to 12’000 with Charlie” is wrong.
We need to know your current altitude, in order to verify the mode C readout on our scope.

After we have that, knowing your assigned altitude is further info to better expedite the traffic flow.

Was there any chatter among the scopes about the one idiot who decided it was a good idea to shoot the Special Flight Rules VFR Bravo Transition over LAX in the middle of the event -- flew it all by the numbers, including remembering to squawk 1201 while on the radial -- then almost landed at SLI instead of SNA?  hahaha...

What's wrong with shooting the SFRA during an event?  That would be a great time to do it.
