Northeastern Corridor 2018 [19JAN 2359-0500z]
« on: December 13, 2017, 06:56:25 PM »

The New York, Boston, and Washington ARTCCs are teaming up to bring you an FNO like no other! We'll be lighting up the Northeastern United States, renowned for it's busy airline commuter and business service, and bringing service to three of the major metropolitan airports of the area: Boston (KBOS), New York-Kennedy (KJFK) and Washington-National (KDCA). We welcome all pilots and aircraft to come and join us for this chance to fly with ATC service in one of the most busy and congested air spaces in the country!

All of the ATC staff did a crazy-outstanding job tonight.  Everybody was stressed to the gills but worked fast, efficient, and patient.  At one point, Kennedy had TWENTY-SIX aircraft on ground preparing for departures.  I can't imagine hearing "BAW314, clearance on request number 25, stand by..."

The pilots I heard on channel were pretty solid but a lot needed things repeated.  Flying in an event this busy you have to be extra attentive to the radio -- put the phone down and listen!  Save the Facebook surfing for when you're on 122.8 in an empty sky!  LOL.

My favorite moment of the night:

Quote
NY_RBR_APP: DAL2526, don't be afraid now; there's traffic at your 11 o'clock, he is six miles turning northeastbound, a heavy Boeing 747 at 6000.  He is British; no factor.  You can give me a right turn to head (couldn't hear the rest over my own laughter)

I got a nice video of my flight that I'll be posting once I get it cut down to a reasonable size.

To all the controllers from the night:

Good job guys! Boston was a little hectic but either turned out great. Cant wait to see what the next thing yall have planned for us!

Here is the preliminary System Review for JFK.

Assumptions, disclaimers, drawbacks, and sources:
The data are very coarse due to the limitations of the VATSIM data update interval (about 2 minutes at best). Furthermore, airborne-based statistics are calculated over a period starting when an aircraft enters N90 (e.g.., crossing CCC at 12000). These times were reasonably estimated through analysis of each flight's position, speed, and altitude profiles. Ground-based times are calculated either from an estimated time of pushback (i.e., a small spike in the aircraft's speed [<5kt] before a period of taxiing and before takeoff) or the start of taxi (i.e., the time when the aircraft's speed is reasonably indicative of taxiing, before takeoff). Small changes in an aircraft's speed can occur erroneously when on the ground so may not indicate when an aircraft is actually pushing back or taxiing. Finally, if there is an aircraft in the list that doesn't have any times associated with it other than a wheels up/wheels down time, then it wasn't found in the vatstats.net database and no reasonable assessment of position, altitude, or speed were made.

With that behind us, let me present some statistics and findings of these data:
  • Total airborne time (time when aircraft enters airspace - time when aircraft lands) averaged slightly over 25 minutes
  • Total airborne time ranged from just under 14 minutes to just over 1 hour!
  • Taxi time averaged almost 21 minutes and ranged between roughly 1 minute and 45 minutes
  • 15 arrivals contributed an accumulated airborne delay minutes of 328 minutes
  • The longest airborne delay experienced was 38 minutes AAL3 from BOS-JFK, landing just before 04Z. This flight cancelled approach twice and got "spun" between NY_CAM_APP (2G) and NY_KFI_APP (2A).
  • 56 departures contributed a total of 737 delay minutes on the ground at JFK (extra taxi time above an average unimpeded taxi-out time of 11 minutes)
  • Total JFK-wide delay was 1065 minutes
  • DCA: 37 arrivals/36 departures
  • BOS: 19 arrivals/30 departures
  • Other noteworthy airports: MIA (12 arrivals/0 departures); ATL (7 arrivals/5 departures); EGLL (3 arrivals/4 departures)
  • Per the most recent 2016 numbers of the cost per minute of delay ($62.55), these delays would have cost $66,615.75 in the real world

  • BOS: 19 arrivals/30 departures
You're saying BOS only received 19 arrivals throughout the entire event? Or just from JFK? Either way I'd check that - definitely is not correct.

From JFK. I thought this might be suspect too but those are the stats I got. If ZBW would like to run a review on their end, we could see better what happened.

I tracked 101 departures, 92 of them went to BOS/JFK. I would say it was 60/40 JFK, so I have to agree with Cam about those stats maybe being off. Probably issues with servinfo/vatstats or something.

You’re both probably right. If VATSIM afforded us better and more frequently updated data, by all means the numbers would look better. I’m only reporting on what I could find post hoc. Thank you both for verifying my suspicions; at the very least, these numbers represent a sample of the actual system “population” during the period and are reflected proportionately.

Total airborne time ranged from just under 14 minutes to just over 1 hour!
Might that one hour one have been me?  I departed KFRG at 0231z and was probably handed to Philly Approach at around 0330z.  However, I was in a DC3 making about 130 knots over the ground, so... lol.  I don't know if your stats are including only aircraft who arrived into or departed from KJFK, or those who passed through the terminal airspace.
